CforR Peer Recovery Coach Institute

A 40 hour Training Course—

Monday thru Friday (9am-5pm)

The CforR Peer Recovery Coach Institute is a five-day training opportunity designed for anyone living with a substance use or dual disorder who would like to be of service.  Participants learn about the science of addiction and the prevalence of dual disorders, increase interpersonal communication skills by practicing methods such as motivational interviewing, and develop tools necessary to coach other men and women through the various stages of recovery.  This training provides a basic understanding of crisis intervention and how to respond in a crisis situation.  Emphasis is placed on the ethical guidelines for Peer Recovery Coaches and enhancing cultural competency.

What is a Peer Recovery Coach?

A Peer Recovery Coach is a specially trained man or woman who serves as a mentor and guide for people living with living with alcoholism, chemical addiction or a dual disorder.  A Peer Recovery Coach empowers their peers with the resources to identify and eliminate any barriers preventing them from following a self-directed pathway to recovery.

Where Can You Find a Peer Recovery Coach?

Peer Recovery Coaches can be found volunteering or working in treatment centers, hospitals, social service agencies, professional assistance programs, community centers, churches, schools, and any other place where you will find people seeking recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the unique roles and responsibilities of a Peer Recovery Coach
  • Discuss the science of addiction, mental illness and the prevalence of dual disorders
  • Identify the components, core values and guiding principles for people in recovery
  • Understand and practice effective methods for healthy interpersonal communication
  • Describe stages of change and stages of recovery and their applications in Peer Recovery Coaching
  • Develop tools to address ethical and cultural issues in Peer Recovery Coaching
  • Practice developing a recovery wellness and action plan
